What Is Aufguss?
Many of you are discovering Amber Wave Sauna Sessions for the first time, so this feels like the right moment to explain the heart of what I do.
I’m Doro – German-born, Scotland-based, and a certified Aufguss Sauna Master. In Germany, Aufguss is part of everyday sauna culture. It’s our tradition, our ritual, and we simply don’t sauna without it. As more people here in Scotland ask, “What exactly is Aufguss?”, it’s time to give a proper introduction.
At its core, Aufguss is a guided heat ritual. Water and ice infused with essential oils are poured over the hot stones, and the Sauna Master uses structured fanning techniques to circulate the steam. Each round becomes a multi-sensory experience shaped by heat, scent, rhythm, breath and atmosphere. A typical round lasts around 6–10 minutes.
But the essence of Aufguss goes beyond technique. It’s a wave of warmth that settles the nervous system, a moment of stillness, a shared ritual that brings people into presence. Some sessions are quiet and meditative; others incorporate music or storytelling. In some settings, Aufguss becomes a full performance (known as Show Aufguss), but the purpose is always the same: to create a focused and restorative experience.
Physically, Aufguss boosts circulation, supports relaxation and helps clear the mind. Emotionally, it lifts the spirit and leaves you feeling rebalanced and recharged.
For me, bringing authentic Aufguss to Scotland is a way of sharing my roots and a tradition that continues to shape how I understand heat, rest and connection. I’m delighted to introduce more people to it through Amber Wave Sauna Sessions – and I look forward to welcoming you into the space.
